Join us for a walking tour of Toyohashi, a pleasant and peaceful Japanese riverside town in Aichi Prefecture, 70 km south east of Nagoya. Fun Fact: Toyohashi is Japan's largest port for the export/import of motor vehicles from nearby Toyota. Points of interest we visit in our walking tour of Toyohashi, Japan are: 1/ Toyohashi City Art Museum, opened 1979 Architect- 株式会社河合松永建築事務所 Kawai Matsunaga Architects Co., Ltd The building is a two-story ferroconcrete construction, with two display rooms downstairs and five display rooms upstairs. The museum is in Toyohashi Park, near Yoshida Castle in downtown Toyohashi. The permanent collections of the museum are concentrated around five themes: 1. Archaeological finds from local shell middens, kofun and ancient ceramic kilns in the Toyohashi area. 2. Cultural artifacts from Edo period and Meiji period sericulture and daily articles. 3. Ceramics from the Edo and Meiji periods used for serving sake (collection of Tadashi Tsukasa). 4. Documents from the Edo period from the local Ōkōchi clan. 5. Yōga style paintings by local artists or by modern Japanese artists depicting themes of local interest. 2/ Yoshida Castle Built on the banks of the Toyogawa (river) in 1505 by Makino Kohaku, a retainer of Imagawa Ujichika to secure his foothold on eastern Mikawa Province against the growing power of the Matsudaira clan in western Mikawa Province. Flat-land style Japanese castle, built on the west bank of the Toyogawa (river). The main bailey was enclosed by a moat, with three three-story yagura, one two-story yagura and three gates. The second and third baileys were also moated, and had smaller yagura and fortified gates. Aside from some remnants of the stonework on the moats, nothing remains of the original structures. The present “castle” is a modern reconstruction of one of the three-story yagura. It houses a small museum with articles pertaining to local history. 3/ Toyohashi City Hall, a 13 story high rise 4/ Yoshida Shrine Has been called Tenno Shrine, Gozu Tenno, and Yoshida Tenno Shrine. Many generals of the past visited this shrine in order to worship Susanoo no mikoto. Among those generals was Minamoto Yoritomo. Because he deeply worshiped this shrine, Mikoshitogyo, which is a recreation of the procession of lord Yoritomo, was born as the Tenno Festival. This was the beginning of the Toyohashi Gion Festival. On the third Friday of July, hand-held fireworks are dedicated to the shrine. On the third Saturday, rockets are launched near the banks of the Toyo River. Also, on the third Sunday, the Yoritomo procession and other events are conducted. #archnation #architecture #travel #design #japan #walkingtour #city
