How can we probe the inner workings of quantum materials? And how can neutrons help us? In this short talk, Miska Elliot introduces the ideas behind a technique called neutron scattering, a useful tool used in Condensed Matter Physics to measure physical properties of both solids and liquids. Miska explains why this is a useful technique, where and how contemporary neutron scattering experiments are performed, and how such experiments can be used to probe the structure and dynamics of quantum magnets. Miska is a second-year DPhil student studying Condensed Matter Physics and working in the Quantum Magnetism and Quantum Phase Transitions research group at the University of Oxford. Her research is centred around performing neutron scattering experiments and comparing these results to contemporary theoretical models. This talk was given as part of the QM Seminar series in July 2020. For more information about QM outreach, go to http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/qmoutreach
