We start by identifying the arrangement of white matter into three primary funiculi: dorsal (posterior), lateral, and ventral (anterior). Each funiculus is further broken down into ascending tracts carrying sensory information to the brain and descending tracts transmitting motor commands from the brain to the body. The discussion highlights the organization of these tracts by function, modality, and anatomical position within the spinal cord. We then explore the major sensory pathways, including the dorsal column–medial lemniscus system for fine touch and proprioception, and the spinothalamic tracts for pain and temperature sensation. For motor function, we review the corticospinal tracts as the primary voluntary motor pathways and additional descending tracts that regulate reflexes, posture, and muscle tone. Special attention is given to how myelination by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system enhances conduction speed and efficiency, ensuring rapid communication between the brain and peripheral effectors.
