Rosalba Neri: Awakening The Devil's Lover Three cowled women approach a gibbet against a lavender sky. Rosalba Neri stares at the portrait of a burning woman knowing it is her burning. Burning as a witch. Burning as a demon lover. A vampire in a red cape and nothing else approaches a witches orgy and feeds on the two women who have been brought there. Paolo Lombardo's 'L'amante del demonio' (AKA 'The Devil's Lover' AKA 'Lucifera: Demon Lover' etc.) is a film I enjoy precisely because it exists in a very odd and slow world. One of the last of the Italian gothics, with moments of incredible beauty, it opens in modern day and the entire plot seems to be part of the kind of dream one inevitably experiences in a house owned by Satan. Others have explained this plot on the internet and I would ask anyone who wants to understand the plot to look it up. Personally, I haven't a clue what it's really about and I don't care. There is a kind of possession and there are vampires and witches and... other things. It always sounds a cop out to say that the story of a film is a dream within a dream within a dream and that the way to enjoy the film is to sit back and let the imagery wash over you but... I like films that are dreams within dreams within dreams where you can simply watch and feel without thinking too much about it. I'm sure intellectuals can explain why it's not a good film or how it means this, that or the other. Lacking any intellectual bones, I am reduced to saying but look at how fascinating Neri is and look at the colours and the moments of walking around old houses in negligees holding candelabras. And how beautifully weird to have a witch's orgy in the middle with a vampire you never see again. Italian genre films still fascinate us because they are far less worried about explanations than they are about simply putting together moments you don't forget. Rosalba Neri looks at times, like she is performing in a ballet with exaggerated dancer's movements. These moments are slow and I have not included any scenes of overt eroticism (this is YouTube after all) or gore... But I find it so fascinating to watch these moments and know that most people will not see this film and might be put off by certain aspects of the film before they reach those moments that make it such a joy to behold.
