A so-called 'Russian March' has been held for the past three years to celebrate National Unity Day, but this year it was banned in Moscow and other cities. Marchers were only allowed to gather in one place in Moscow city centre, where a few hundred participants from various ultra-nationalist organisations formed up. Other nationalist groups, including the Movement Against Illegal Migration, which tried to gather and "March to the Kremlin" - as it was announced on their website - were detained by riot police. The new holiday was created in 2005 to replace the traditional 7 November celebration of the 1917 Bolshevik seizure of power. The Kremlin has tried to give it historical significance by tying it to the 1612 expulsion of Polish and Cossack troops who briefly took Moscow at a time of political disarray, but it has now been seized upon by extreme nationalists.
