The old police station and magistrates' court on Bonny Street in Blackpool, notable for their brutalist concrete architecture, have been prominent landmarks in the town center since their opening in 1971. Designed by Lancashire architect Roger Booth, these buildings served the community for several decades. However, after the police station's closure to the public in 2018, the structures remained vacant and became targets for vandalism and urban exploration. In December 2024, DSM Demolition was appointed to undertake the demolition of these buildings, along with the adjacent Chapel Street car park and a former joke shop on Central Drive. The demolition work commenced in early February 2025 and is expected to be completed by July 2025. This clearance is a significant step in the broader Blackpool Central redevelopment project, a £300 million leisure development aimed at revitalizing the area. The cleared site is anticipated to attract new developers, especially following the collapse of previous investors in October 2024. BLACKPOOLGAZETTE.CO.UK The Blackpool Central project encompasses a 17-acre site and is set to transform the town's landscape with new leisure facilities, including plans for a £40 million courthouse on Devonshire Road. While construction of the new courthouse has faced delays due to contractor issues, efforts are underway to appoint a new contractor and resume the project. BLACKPOOLGAZETTE.CO.UK
