Beach Safety Ocean Rescue is hiring summer lifeguards Do you have what it takes to be a Volusia County lifeguard? The county will hire more than 100 part-time lifeguards to help keep beachgoers safe this summer. Tryouts Saturday, March 1 Port Orange YMCA: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ormond YMCA: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8 DeLand YMCA: 8 to 10 a.m. Port Orange YMCA: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ormond YMCA: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15 Port Orange YMCA: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ormond YMCA: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 22 DeLand YMCA: 8 to 10 a.m. Deltona YMCA: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ormond YMCA: 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 Daytona State College: 5 to 7 p.m. Those who meet the requirements must attend training classes and complete a 40-hour first responder/CPR course. Recruit class dates Classes will be held at the Lifeguard Headquarters, 515 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach. Class 1: March 24 to 29 Class 2: March 29 and 30; April 5, 6, 12 and 13 Qualifications Applicants must be at least 17 years old on or before June 1, 2014, and be able to: • Swim 500 meters freestyle in under 10 minutes • Swim 50 yards freestyle in under 30 seconds • Run a half-mile in under 3 minutes, 15 seconds Successful completion of the recruit class, background check, physical and drug screening are conditions for hire.
