Hello Friends! This video is all about orthodontic treatment and how it can affect TMJ Disorders (also known as TMJ/TMD or TMJD). The teeth coming together like cogs on a gear and the two temporomandibular joints (TMJs) have a relationship similar to the three legs of a tripod. If one of these "legs" is altered, it can affect the balance of the whole system. What that means in more simple terms is simply that there IS a relationship between the bite/occlusion (the way the teeth come together) and the health and functionality of the temporomandibular joints. I've seen orthodontia affect the TMJs in a positive way AND a negative way, so this video is in no way an orthodontia-bashing video. I'm simply putting information out there. PLEASE DO NOT BLAME YOUR ORTHODONTIST FOR YOUR TMJD! It is HIGHLY unpredictable as to exactly HOW orthodontia will affect the TMJs AND there are many factors that can be causative factors in TMJD: previous whiplash incidents, postural discrepancies, occlusion, hormonal influences, and more! If you're new to what TMJ Disorder is, typical symptoms are clicking, popping, crackling noises in the jaw, episodes of the jaw catching or locking, headaches, neck pain, ear pain, and jaw pain.
