Translating "The Sword" (名劍) from the film The Sword 1980 (名劍) Original Cantonese song by Adam Cheng (鄭少秋). "The Sword" is a wuxia themed film directed by Patrick Tam (譚家明) that was released during 1980 to critical acclaim. At the time, the film set the benchmark for action, story telling, cinematography, and martial arts choreography. It was also beautifully shot and very visually artistic. I thoroughly enjoyed the film as a kid and continue to watch and enjoy it as an adult. The cast includes Adam Cheng, Norman Chui (徐少強), Tien Feng (田豐), Eddy Ko (高雄), Chui Kit (徐杰 ) who is also known as Jade Hsu, Bonnie Ngai (魏秋桦), and JoJo Chan (陳琪琪). I have to say that I really enjoyed Adam Cheng's performance in this film and his varied displays of emotions. I thought he performed the action scenes pretty good. Finally, he had a good on screen presence with all three actresses. I also enjoyed the performance of Jade Hsu who went from a fun girl who likes to prank and play tricks to someone eager for revenge. Not only was Jade beautiful but she had a good range and variety in her acting. Now, when it comes to Norman Chui, I cannot fathom how he could have abruptly step away from the set of The Reincarnated 1979 produced by ATV as part of a live production to be in this film. It caused massive chaos to the Asian entertainment industry but for what? To play some sleazy and despicable villain who hardly appears in the film? Obviously "brains" and "intelligence" cannot be associated with Norman. When I watched this film as a kid, I disliked Norman and pretty much everything he appeared in. I gather most of the audience felt the same way as his popularity dipped for years after this film. As for the song "The Sword" it was short but powerful number sang by Adam Cheng. I have wanted to translate this song for a while now, so enjoy...
