The Medicine Buddha, known as Bhaisajyaguru or "Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata," is the supreme being of the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli World. Why is he called by this name? It's because his realm is as clear and pure as lapis lazuli, without any impurities—a place of true purity and cleanliness. He is accompanied by two powerful attendants: the Bodhisattvas of Sunlight and Moonlight Radiance, together known in Buddhism as the "Eastern Three Sages." Long, long ago, during his path to enlightenment, the Medicine Buddha made twelve great vows before the Buddha called Luminous Radiance. These vows were aimed at helping sentient beings overcome various difficulties in life. His wish is for everyone to be healthy, happy, attractive, wealthy, and to live prosperous lives. Most importantly, he desires to guide everyone on the path to liberation. In today's world, we are overwhelmed with countless troubles, especially the three poisons: greed, anger, and ignorance, which not only disturb our minds but also cause physical ailments. Seeing this, the Medicine Buddha is deeply concerned and has vowed to help alleviate these sufferings and diseases, so that we can all live joyful and healthy lives. Some may wonder, "Can the Medicine Buddha really help me solve all these problems?" The answer is a resounding yes! In the final section of the Medicine Buddha Sutra, Ananda asked the Buddha, "What should we call this Dharma practice, and how should we uphold it?" The Buddha replied, "This Dharma practice is called 'The Original Vows and Merits of the Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata.' It is also called 'The Mantra of the Twelve Yaksha Generals for the Benefit of Sentient Beings' and 'The Elimination of All Karmic Obstacles.'" Thus, reciting the sacred name of the Medicine Buddha not only helps to remove karmic obstacles—those nagging nails embedded in our lives—but also brings double benefits. After all, how can one be truly happy without first removing these obstacles? For instance, many people fear illness the most, so the sixth and seventh vows of the Medicine Buddha are specifically to help us avoid the suffering of sickness. If life isn't going smoothly, don't worry—the third, eleventh, and twelfth vows of the Medicine Buddha are there to address these issues. He especially wishes for us to live abundant and fulfilling lives, never to suffer from hunger or cold. Additionally, the Medicine Buddha is aware that false teachings are rampant nowadays, leading many astray. His fourth and ninth vows are meant to help us regain correct faith and free us from the bonds of heretical views. If you face injustice, don’t worry—the Medicine Buddha will help resolve it! In summary, the twelve great vows of the Medicine Buddha are all designed to ensure our physical and mental well-being, allowing us to lead a fulfilling and joyful life.
