The existence of a church dedicated to the holy bishop Gaudentius is documented from the year 1000, when there was an oratory dependent on the nearby church of Olgiate. The ancient medieval building was completely rebuilt between 1566 and 1581, the year in which the parish officially passed to Busto Arsizio. In 1743, the people of Fagnano Olona (Italy) took over the great work of art that we can still admire today, demolishing the old parish church to make a huge new temple. The wall structure of the church was completed in five years and opened for worship in the summer of 1748. A large donation made it possible in 1777 to build the new marble high altar and the foundations of the bell tower, erected between 1786 and 1788 after the completion of the sacristy. A concert of five bells, made in 1791 by the Mainoni foundry, was placed on top of the 40-metre bell tower. The bell tower was actually completed in 1871 with the casting of a new concert of six bells, made in Varese by Bizzozero using 18th-century bronze. The concert was made in an intermediate key between B major and B flat. The parish priest invited us on Epiphany; I ran all the way from Monza to Fagnano to hear the bells ringing at midday. The concert was much appreciated, as it was played using all the traditional musical scales. B flat - c' - d' - e' flat - f' - g' The original design did not include a portico on the façade, but these was built so that the local lords could place their coat of arms on the façade. The single nave was decorated starting in 1835 and completed in the first half of the 20th century, following ancient lines perfectly suited to the stuccoed Baroque layout. The church was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Ferrari on 5 May 1901, while further work was necessary to complete the interior decoration, including new painted stained glass windows.
