CARAA 2026 is officially underway, and Congressman Eric Yap reminded athletes that winning isn’t everything. Speaking during the opening, he shared the story of Thomas Edison and how the encouraging words of his mother helped shape his success. “Thomas Edison did not become great because of talent alone; he became great because someone chose her words carefully. Words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Words can be build, but they can also destroy," Yap said. He emphasized that in sports, words matter every day. “A team can lose energy not from fatigue, but from careless words. One insult can break confidence; one negative remark can erase months of training. But one encouragement can change everything,” he added. Yap challenged the delegates to guard their words and use them to strengthen others. “Compete with fire in your heart, fight with discipline in your body, and speak with wisdom from your mouth. One of you may become the next great champion of this region, ignited by the belief of someone—your coach, teammate, parent, or even yourself.” He concluded with a message of inspiration: “Let this week be not only about strong legs and fast arms but also about powerful encouragement. Medals will be won not only by the fastest or strongest but by those who refuse to accept the limits others place on them.” Caption by Larry Mangawa / BSU Intern Edited by Labnay Gat - onen / BSU Intern #CongresssmanEricYap #CongressmanSpeech #CARAAA2026 #DelegatesOpening
