A playthrough of Sega's 1991 arcade run-and-gun shooter for the Sega Genesis, Midnight Resistance. Played through on the default difficulty setting. Midnight Resistance was originally a 1989 Data East arcade rotary joystick shooter, and it became the company's first release on the Genesis two years later. Thankfully, they oversaw the development themselves with the same team that was later responsible for the excellent Genesis port of Captain America and the Avengers. It looks a lot like Contra, but it certainly doesn't feel like it to play. The arcade used joysticks that could rotate to aim your weapons (like Ikari Warriors and Heavy Barrel did) so that you could control your running independent of your aiming. The Genesis controller obviously wasn't particularly well suited to this style of controls, so you are given a number of surprisingly functional replacements here. I generally used the default setup that has a button lock for aiming and an auto-fire switch. It doesn't feel the same as the arcade or as Contra, but it works very well once you get used to it. The game is a pretty faithful port, and by far the best version of the various home games. The graphics are pretty close besides the slight drop in color, and the Genesis music isn't just accurate - it's significantly better than the arcade game's comparatively weak and tinny FM only tracks. The game plays well - though it's way too easy and short - but the real reason to play it is the soundtrack. There are only a couple of songs that repeat, but they're great. The beginning of the first level is pretty good at pumping you up when it starts blasting that theme while you ride around on top of the truck. It's a good Data East game - not awesome, but good - but the music really pushes this one into must-have territory for me. _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
