A panhard rod keeps the rear axle centered between the frame and body of the vehicle, whilst the 4 link rear end (2 upper and lower control arms per side) keep the axle centered in the wheel well. When a vehicle is lifted, the axle shifts over to one side due to the panhard rod only being a fixed length. This causes the rear end to be out of alignment and not track down the road correctly.
