✅What is a hip joint? ⭕The hip joint is a ball and socket type of synovial joint that connects the pelvic girdle to the lower limb. In this joint, the head of the femur articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvic (hip) bone. ⭕The hip joint is a multiaxial joint and permits a wide range of motion; flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, external rotation, internal rotation and circumduction. Compared to the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint, however, this joint sacrifices mobility for stability as it is designed for weight bearing. ⭕The entire weight of the upper body is transmitted through this joint to the lower limbs during standing. ⭕The hip joint is the most stable joint in the human body. ✅What is HIP FRACTURE ⭕A hip fracture happens when the upper part of the thighbone (femur) breaks. The injury usually results from a fall or car accident. Hip fractures are more common in older people because bones weaken and become more brittle with age. ⭕Most hip fractures cause severe pain and require surgery immediately. Some people need a total hip replacement after a hip fracture. ✅What is the Severity of hip fracture ⭕The severity of the injury depends on several factors, including: ⭕The number and size of the fracture fragments ⭕The amount each piece is out of place (displaced) — In some cases, the broken ends of bones line up adequately; in more severe fractures, there may be a large gap between the broken pieces, or the fragments may overlap each other. ⭕The injury to the cartilage surfaces of both the acetabulum and the head of the femur ⭕The injury to surrounding soft tissues, such as muscle, tendons, nerves, and skin ⭕If the bone breaks in such a way that bone fragments stick out through the skin or a wound penetrates down to the broken bone, the fracture is called an "open" or compound fracture. This type of fracture is particularly serious because, once the skin is broken, infection in both the wound and the bone can occur. Immediate treatment is required to prevent infection. ⭕Open fractures of the acetabulum are rare because the hip joint is well covered with soft tissues. When they do occur, they are usually the result of very high-energy trauma. ✅What are the types of Hip Fracture The three most common types of hip fractures are: ⭕Intracapsular Fractures – break occurs below the ball or in the neck of the femur ⭕Intertrochanteric Fractures – break occurs between the greater trochanter and lesser trochanter ⭕Subtrochanteric Fractures – break occurs below the lesser trochanter or further down the femur ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mera Physio - Physiotherapy & Pain Clinic is a chain of physiotherapy clinics across India.
