Mairtini Brillian Rays Watercolors Adventure Set Purchased off AliExpress 4piece: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/325680... 12 Piece Palette: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/325680... 4 piece- I thought they'd secured it with clingwrap, but it was more like just a protective film to keep it from getting scratched. The 4 pans are friction fit inside (so they're removable), and the palette snaps closed via a spring in the hinge. 12 Piece This is the Adventure Set Surprised the colors weren't wrapped No literature included, which is also surprising? This is listed as college grade, so I'm going to review it as student grade (probably the same thing) 2 of the colors came loose, had to swatch em to figure out what they are Swatching on Blick Studio Watercolor paper Spritzed with water to preactivate Going to start with the 4piece set first: Colors in this set: 451- Brown Madder 121-Turquoise Blue 149- Permanent Green Pale 106 Magenta Takes a little while for the w/c to soak up the paint- these might have dried up too much in storage. These seem like they were subpacked from tubes 12 Piece set: Colors in this set Permanent yellow light- opaque pyrrole red- transparent cadmium red neo- opaque indian red- opaque permanent violet- transparent prussican blue- transparent cobalt blue- semi opaque pthalocyanine blue (green) transparent olive green- transparent forest green- semi opaque earthyellow- opaque abaiser- semi opaque The half-pan formulation reactivates better and more easily Colors are very finely milled, hard to tell if these are leaning on dye-based or pigments. No pigment info for these, the subpacked quartets do have pigment info in the listing. These washed out too readily in the water, not much graduation for most colors, and not noticing much granulation either. Color Mixing: Atomic: Color mixes are fairly muted, and it's somewhat challenging to create certain color mixes- a good clean orange, a half-decent purple, bright greens- everything's kinda muddy and muted. Optical: Not great either. Colors are muted and somewhat muddy- these do not make for clean, luminous glazes. Lift Test: Some lifting, not any total lifting, but it's also difficult to see, because the swatches are so light. Wet into Wet: Colors seem to really desaturate out and lose a lot of their umph. Not a lot of granulation. Wet into wet dots don't really halo, but they do speckle and leave white specks so I do think there's a fair amount of extender in these. Comparable palettes: These aren't as bad as many of the dye-based palettes I've reviewed; they might be on par with the Superior Half Pan palette, which just left me underwhelmed. They might also be comparable to the HIMI travel palette. I would definitely rank them below the Meiliang palette. These might be worth a fieldtest, b/c I'm getting sorta the Schpirerr Farben/Superior half-pan vibes, and those ended up surprising me in the field test. Palettes Shown: Himi Solid Watercolors Artify Watercolors Van Gogh Watercolors Mont Marte Watercolors Phoenix Watercolors Superior Watercolors Meiliang Watercolors Paul Rubens Travel Set Superior Folding Palette Pros and Cons Pros: The palettes for the Brillan Rays are all really cute lil palettes Cons: No additional pack ins- no waterbrush, no swatch card, and the pans themselves weren't even wrapped and arrived dusty. No literature talking about the brand or paperwork explaining the pigments. If this was given as a gift, you wouldn't have the reference material to even know what you got Price: $30ish is kinda steep when compared to some of the other student grade palettes I showed yall today Accessibility- I've only seen this on AliExpress, and Mairtini is one of those brands that sometimes disappears entirely from AliExpress Color Saturation: From today's swatches, these are really disappointing in saturation- they're just kinda weak. Even the little quad, which I assume was filled from tubes, is really weak and requires much scrubbing to activate. Verdict: There are better student grade sets on the market at a lower price point- skip these Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 01:36 Mairtini Adventure Palette 02:31 The Listing 07:21 Unwrapping 10:28 The Half Pans 14:15 Swatching on Blick 17:13 Color Mixing 19:44 The Lift Test 20:36 Wet into Wet 23:45 Alternatives 34:23 Pros and Cons 40:16 The Verdict 41:57 Final Thoughts Music: Sunny Travel- Nico Staf The Story of One Life Silver Blue Light The Story of One Life English Country Garden- Aaron Kenny Sunset Dream- Cheel #ItCamefromAliExpress #MairtiniWatercolorpalette #budgetwatercolor
