Spearfishing New York 2024.07.09 Summer 2024 A rusty lighthouse at the entrance of the New York Bay. Surrounded by fog. The concrete base crumbling with the steel rods exposed. @vitaliy_freediver invited me for spearfishing in some new locations. We left Brooklyn passing by Coney Island and Brighton beach. We got a bit late, when the tide had turned, with stronger current, as the fog made it harder to find the spot. The lighthouse shoal was surrounded by a horseshoe shape rock barrier. There was big swell from the south, so I decided to look on the outer rocks on the sheltered side. The other 2 guys were looking for striped bass in the little cove, which i felt it was a bit too cramped for 3. I was not interested in striped bass. I was surprised how shallow the seabed was around the lighthouse. Maybe 7 m/25 ft. There was a lot of blackfish, but not much else. Probably this is a good spot in April and November, the months when blackfish capture is allowed. But the rocks gave me cover, and I managed to get 2 porgies and miss one. Porgies are very skittish and fast, any sudden movement will make them flee. I was surprised I could get so close to a couple. Otherwhise it is best to lay still and blend in to the bottom, and maybe they will come close. The boat was about 100 yards/meters away. I was concerned that if there was a strong tidal current it would be possible to be pushed away from the boat. So I suggested we would swim back to the boat one at the time. The water was not too clear, due to the swell and the wind. It was a great day, and made me hope to go back on better conditions, when blackfish season is open.
