Swimbait Review: D.S. Crawler The DS crawler is a new option to meet the recent demand for crawler-style baits. The DS is a one piece wooden version (Alaskan Yellow Cedar), featuring tunable metal wings, wire-through construction, and a swiveling belly hook. The DS Crawler comes in at 5" length and 3 Oz. One the straight moderate/moderate slow retrieve, the bait gives that nice side to side head hunt, with the body rolling to either side as one wing catches water and dives while the other rises. you can hear that audible plop, and the noise can be tuned in via the wing angle. You also get some metallic click, as the hardware attaching the wing to the body is also metal, making contact with the joint of the wing. As you slow down, the action of the bait becomes more subtle, as the wings just barely come out of the water. The surface disturbance is noticeable, as rings come from either side of the bait as the wing touches down. You still get that nice plop, just a little more subtle. You can really crawl this thing and continue to have surface disturbance. Donald also mentioned that his bait will burn if tuned in properly- I am a crawler noob so I was unable to get it dialed perfectly, but with more time and adjustment I look forward to seeing how much commotion the bait will make at fast speeds! An untuned crawler tends to barrel roll at faster speeds, which was my experience. I did find that tweaking the wings forward allowed the bait to be worked faster, while tweaked them back helped the slow crawl. I also threw in a couple of odd retrieves. The first was just like a popper, pulling the bait with sharp downward twitches. Those wings really catch and throw water, and occasionally the bait will jump right out of the water. The other retrieve was a "walk", or more accurately a pivot. This can be done with upward rod snaps, and you can get the bait to turn 180 degrees on itself while staying relatively in place. I threw the DS Crawler on a Leviathan Heavy, Tranx 400, and 20 lb Izorline. I'm sure a mono or braid selection would suffice, along with a slightly lighter rod. I just prefer overkill LOL.
