Rivington stands at the edge of Baldur’s Gate, uneasy and watchful. A child named Yenna approaches Velastra, asking about her mother, missing for ten days beyond the city walls. There are no answers — only food offered, and the road forward. By the river, the Ironhand Gnomes have made a hidden base in the caves. Wulbren Bongle speaks plainly: Baldur’s Gate is under Gortash’s control. Steel Watchers patrol the city, forged by the Gondians in a factory within. Wulbren has built an explosive to destroy it all. Barcus Wroot asks for restraint — to speak with the Gondians first. Velastra agrees to both. The enemy is shared, but choices still matter. Along the same riverbank, another cave lies concealed in the cliffs. Karlach scouts ahead. Three doppelgangers are discovered, speaking of ritual killings and piles of bodies. The ambush is swift and absolute. They fall before a single strike can be returned. What remains is horror. Mutilated corpses. Severed limbs. One hidden passage leads beneath the Open Hand Temple. A crime has already shaken the city. The High Priest has been brutally murdered, and blame has fallen on a supposed fugitive. Velastra reports what was found below the temple — assassins, rituals. Valeria, the winged investigator, resists at first, but agrees the case cannot yet be closed. The investigation continues. Outside the Rivington Gazette, a journalist seeks an interview. Velastra refuses. The smile remains. The journalist transforms. Orin. She promises to wait at Velastra’s “father’s” home and kill her before his eyes. Then she is gone. Crossing into Wyrm’s Crossing, Velastra enters Sharess’ Caress, where Voss promised to wait. Instead, he is found in desperate conversation with Raphael. Voss pleads. No help is given. Raphael turns to Velastra with an offer. The Orphic Hammer in exchange for the Nether Crown — an artifact that would grant him dominion over the Nine Hells. He claims the Emperor is no ally, and that Orpheus is the only path to victory. The offer is refused. Deals with devils always demand more than they admit. Velastra will not be bound by the Emperor, by Raphael, or by Voss. If the Elder Brain is to be defeated, the path must be her own.
