"Anything more than 220bhp in a front wheel drive is a waste of time" is something that has been said for decades and still said now by a lot of clueless people, but in reality they couldn't be more wrong. And you know what? The car that maybe proves it best existed long before that became a common thing people said, 1987 in fact. A successful circuit race car, that could keep up and often beat RWD and 4WD cars with 550bhp+, even heavily tuned 911 Turbos? Yep. One that made 380bhp from under 1400cc and just 8 valves, thanks to a big turbo pushing out 2.8bar boost? Yep. Running massive 275 wide 17inch front tyres and weighed just 850kg? Yep. One that was initially planned to be 4x4, even had a transmission tunnel ready for it in the chassis, but after some development work it worked so well as FWD they didn't bother in the end? Yep. And one that most people don't know changed to a 1.6ltr 16V engine for the second half of the 1988 season that made over 500bhp at full boost? Yep. Still FWD too! And what car? A tiny little Citroen AX! The coolest looking AX ever, and insanely fast too. This video is all about the Citroen AX SuperProduction race cars from 1987 and 1988, including a LOT of detail most have never seen or heard of before, christ, even I'd not heard about some of it until I did a lot of research and translating from French! These cars were insane, the cars they raced against were insane, some of the tracks (Monaco and the heavily banked one featured on Ken Block Gymkhana 3 for example) were insane, but anyone even remotely in to tuned cars needs to watch this video. For this video the format is mostly action footage that I've added captions to to explain the car and the specs, and while it's 15min long, it's more added info and tech stuff from start to end, so not really one to skip through! I love these cars and while it took me way longer to make than I expected, I loved making this video to be honest, so hope you lot do too. Enjoy!
