What truly defines the way we live each day? In this thought-provoking talk, Dr. G.V.S. Murthy explores how properties — the fundamental characteristics of the world around us — quietly shape our everyday lives. From the materials we use to the systems we build, it is these inherent properties that influence possibility, progress and performance. Aligning with the theme of Coalescence, he weaves together the sub-themes of Innovation, Collaboration, and Resilience, showing how meaningful breakthroughs happen when ideas, disciplines, and people come together. Progress is rarely isolated — it emerges when strengths combine, adapt and endure. This talk invites us to look deeper at the foundations of change and recognize that when knowledge coalesces with purpose, transformation becomes inevitable. Dr. G. V. S. Murthy is a distinguished Materials Scientist whose career spans over three decades at CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory, operating at the intersection of Physics, Engineering and National service. With a strong academic foundation culminating in a PhD focused on amorphous magnetic alloys, his work translates microscopic scientific understanding into macroscopic reliability of mission-critical systems. Dr. Murthy has played a pivotal role in advancing materials characterization, non-destructive evaluation and remaining life assessment technologies, directly supporting strategic applications in Defence and Energy sectors. A recipient of the C. V. Raman Prize and the CSIR Technology Award, he is also a dedicated mentor and educator, embodying the true spirit of coalescence—where science, service, and stewardship converge to build lasting impact. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
