Breast Surgery: Addressing Asymmetry | Aesthetic Surgical Images One thing to consider when thinking about breast enhancement or breast symmetry, is that not all breasts are created equal. Unfortunately most people have at least some asymmetry of the breasts. It can be a problem with breasts size being different from side to side, or breasts shape being different from side to side. A lot of patients notice that asymmetry develops as they develop in their teenage years. And unfortunately doesn't correct itself over time. As we start developing most people are a little different from side to side but, thank goodness, in the late teens early twenties a lot of things even out. When it doesn't, it becomes something that can really can be bothersome. Surgical correction of it, helps to just improve shape, improve size, and improve self esteem. Usually the biggest difference is volume difference from side to side. That can usually be managed with breast implants of varying sizes. If you have enough fullness on one side and an implant on the other, by itself, can correct that problem, or if we want to do a little tweaking of size on both sides, we just use the differential fill from one side to the other. A lot of times, when one is significantly larger than the other, there's a big difference in shape and you can develop what's called ptosis or drooping of that breast, and we can't match that with an implant alone. Usually in that situation we need an implant on the smaller side, possibly an implant on the larger side, but then an adjustment of the skin envelope with a lifting, to get the nipple in the same position, so things look nice and even. Which particular procedures you need is going to depend on what anatomy we start with and what your goals are in the long run.
