Here's why: al(most) all world maps are wrong! Thanks for 1000 subscriber on youtube!!! 😆 Music by bensound.com Transcript for you (feel free to use this for your own videos as long as you give credit and tag me): Look at this map. You've probably seen it thousands of times before. But would it shock you to find out that California is twice the size of portugal? What about that Greenland can easily fit into the African continent over 14 times. Or even that Australia is larger than the entire continent of Europe! I hate to come out and say it but this map has been lying to you! But first, thank you for 1000 subscribers. And now, Fact Attack presents: why almost all maps are wrong! The main problem here is projection, which if you're not familiar, is the impossible task of representing a 3 dimensional sphere in a 2 dimensional rectangle. This is the person who created the projection for the map from earlier, Gerardus Mercator. In 1569, this guy created the projection that he humbly named after himself, The Mercator Projection. Mercator's design was instantly popular because it represents where countries are in relation to each other, making navigating easier. But the fundamental problem here is the extreme distortion at the poles. The shapes of countries may be correct but their sizes unfortunately can't be represented on this projection. Russia and Canada are respectively the largest and second largest countries in the world are seemingly massive but as I bring them closer to the equator, they don't seem so impressively huge. Yet, there are other projections out there for example this guy, who's called Arno Peters. His projection is called the Peter's projection and it seemingly is much better but instead of the Mercators flaw of shape over size, this time it's reversed with size over shape. But hey, maybe we'll get it right some day. See you in the next video...
