#pondicherry #auroville #kanchipuram #puducherry #matrimandir #southindia Pondicherry (or Puducherry), a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, is now a Union Territory town bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu state. Its French legacy is preserved in its French Quarter, with tree-lined streets, mustard-colored colonial villas and chic boutiques. A seaside promenade runs along the Bay of Bengal and passes several statues, including a 4m-high Gandhi Memorial. The Matrimandir's Inner Chamber is a silent, serene space designed for contemplation, with white marble walls and no artificial lights. The chamber is dominated by the world's largest optically perfect glass globe at its center, which is illuminated by a single ray of sunlight guided through a helioscope. This natural light is intended to provide a focal point for meditation and inner peace. Key features of the Inner Chamber • Purpose: The Inner Chamber is a space for silent, introspective meditation, envisioned as a place to connect with higher consciousness. • Lighting: It is lit entirely by natural light from a single ray of sunlight that is electronically guided through a helioscope, so there are no artificial lights. • Central feature: The focal point is the world's largest optically perfect glass globe, which sits at the center of the chamber. • Interior design: The space is a simple, pristine white marble area, decorated with intricate geometric patterns to evoke harmony. • Atmosphere: The chamber is climate-controlled for meditation and is meant to be a distraction-free environment. Visiting details • Booking: Visits require prior booking, made in person at the Visitor's Centre with a valid government ID. • Restrictions: Children under 10 are not allowed inside, and personal items like cameras and cell phones must be left at a deposit counter outside the Inner Chamber area. Pichavaram consists of a number of islands interspersing a vast expanse of water covered with mangrove forest.[3] The Pichavaram mangrove Forest is one of the largest mangrove forests in India covering about 45 km2 of area (as of 2019). It is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sand bar. The biotope consists of species like Avicennia and Rhizophora. It also supports the existence of rare varieties of economically important shells and fishes.[4][5]
