Learn about the unknown history of this place and its importance in the functioning of the camp. We invite you to discover the dark secrets of the SS canteen with us. Members of the SS (Schutzstaffel) were responsible for supervising the camp and managing its operation. The SS men were known for their brutality and ruthlessness in their treatment of prisoners. The SS canteen at Auschwitz-Birkenau served as a place where SS members could rest, eat and relax away from their daily camp duties. It was a space where they could socialize, away from the eyes of the prisoners. The canteen was also intended to maintain morale among SS members by providing them with certain amenities and comfort.
