It’s one of the busiest days of the year at Briar Branch Alpaca Farm in Clements: shearing day. Today, all 50-some of the alpaca currently living on the farm are taking turns getting their annual haircut. Joanne’s there to lend a hand, but it’s a dirty, tricky job, and farmer Dana Russell enlists the help of a professional shearer to get it all done. As alpaca after alpaca is relieved of its thick winter coat, Dana explains just what it is about alpaca fleece that makes it so special. At Briar Branch, Dana does what she can to make sure her alpacas produce top-notch fiber. Part of that comes down to breeding, but another important aspect is diet. We’ll visit the farm’s pastures, where the alpacas graze their days away. Grain-fed alpacas produce courser fiber, so ensuring healthy pasture through practices like rotational grazing is an important part of Dana’s day-to-day work on the farm.
