The Okakarara Town Council has commenced the provision of plots at the semi-formalised Maturura informal settlement, targeting ultra-low-income residents to curb land grabbing and improve orderly development. Okakarara Mayor Asnath Jazukuka said the Council has so far received 450 applications, of which 250 residents have already been allocated plots. Each plot measures 350 square meters and is being offered for N$5,500 to make land ownership more accessible to vulnerable community members. Those who wish to add water to their plots at Matutura can also apply for inclusion in the prepaid water system. Jazukuka said formalising land allocations is a key strategy to address the long-standing challenge of illegal land occupancy in the town. Meanwhile, the Town Council has entered into an agreement with Development Workshop Namibia to begin servicing Extension 7, where plots will also measure 350 square metres. Further developments at Okakarara include progress on the deed of sale for the construction of a supermarket, set to improve access to essential goods and services for residents. In addition, Cenored is expected to install high-mast lights in the Okakango area to enhance safety and visibility.
