(26 Nov 1995) English/Nat Less than a year after the death of Joe Slovo, South Africans are able to buy a part of the Slovo they knew little of - the writer. Slovo: The Unfinished Biography has gone on sale in the country, shedding a new light on the man most South Africans knew as Communists Party leader, freedom fighter, negotiator and housing minister. Joe Slovo's unfinished autobiography was launched at Newtown Art galleries, in a trendy neighbourhood of Johannesburg. The autobiography was compiled by Slovo's widow, Helena Dolny, who after his death inherited a file with her late husband's writing. Much of Slovo's writings originated from the time following the murder of his first wife in 1982. Ruth First was killed by a bomb allegedly posted to her by the South African military. In the traumatic months that followed, Slovo was in a reflective mood and on advice of a friend took to writing to deal with his turbulent emotions. Dolny decided to have the works published in their own right. SOUNDBITE: "The bit that I did was difficult in that writing an introduction, I guess, that it took me a couple of weeks just to write a few pages because there was so much going on in your head of looking over a life together. And then there was this idea of completing through doing a selection of other peoples writings and I had a thousand letters so actually going through those letters 6 months later for the second time was quite difficult." SUPER CAPTION: Helena Dolny, Joe Slovo's widow Many of Slovo's closest friends attended the launch, including long time friend President Nelson Mandela, who wrote a foreword to the book. Slovo was the first white in the leadership of the African National Congress. He led the movement's guerrilla wing after it decided whites would never surrender power without a fight. SOUNDBITE: "Across our more than 40 years of friendship one thing shone through Joe's character - the word surrender was never in his vocabulary. He was daring through and through. SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela, South African president Slovo's daughter Shaun, on whose memoirs the movie A World Apart is based, had come all the way from London to attend the launch. SOUNDBITE: It kind of formalised the fact that Joe is dead which has been difficult to accept for us because during his lifetime he was mostly a continent away anyway. SUPER CAPTION: Shaun Slovo, Joe Slovo's daughter Slovo died on 6 January of bone marrow cancer. He was 68. Mandela called him a "hero of the South African people" and honoured him with a national day of mourning and a state funeral. Slovo became only the second white person to be buried in Avalon cemetery in Soweto and was laid to rest alongside other activists in what is known as Hero's Acre. Only months before his death, Slovo told APTV he would die "with the satisfaction that I've had a rare experience". SOUNDBITE: It's a never-ending process, the improvement of the human condition. And I don't think we'll ever reach a moment of time in this country of any other country where people will be able to sit back and say well there is nothing more to do, you know, things are perfect. I think the search after perfection will go on forever. SUPER CAPTION: Joe Slovo, the late Communist Party leader and housing minister As an outspoken communist who fought for the cause of the oppressed black masses, Slovo was labelled dangerous and wanted by the Apartheid government. But those blacks embraced him as a hero of the struggle against white minority rule and saw him as a symbol for racial reconciliation.
