This clip was produced with the support of the Canadian Media Fund Jay Douglas’ motivation for participating in the TVO Original documentary PLAY IT LOUD! was to educate the youth about the history of Jamaican music in Canada. It was on this journey back to his elementary school – Mt. Ward Primary – in Ramble, Jamaica that Jay’s goal first started to be realized. In this extra scene not included in the film, we go to “the beginning of Jay Douglas”, as he reconnects with a former classmate and imparts his knowledge on the students. The film follows Jay’s own education journey, and how that set him up for a fulfilling life in music. Now with the film out, students across Canada are learning the important history that Jay has lived. They are discovering the important contributions of the Jamaican Canadian community to Canada’s cultural heritage. If you know a music educator, this is a film that they might appreciate!
