(6 Oct 1996) Italian/Nat The Pope has arrived at Rome's Gemelli hospital on Sunday for the operation to remove his appendix. As he left the Vatican in the early evening he was surrounded by large cheering crowds wishing him good-luck. It had been a long and tense wait for many of the Pope's well-wishers who stood for hours outside the gates of the Vatican. Hundreds of people turned out to get a glimpse of the Pontiff as his convoy rolled off towards the Italian capital's Gemelli hospital. One nun echoed the sentiments of millions of Catholics praying for the Pope's speedy recovery from surgery. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) "While I was walking across St. Peter's I looked up to his window and asked the Holy Father to bless him and help him to continue to do good in this world." SUPER CAPTION: Sister Brena The operation will be the Pope's sixth at the Rome hospital, dating back to emergency surgery in 1981 after he was wounded in an attempted assassination in St. Peter's Square. He will be in a tenth floor apartment that has been specially set up for him. He arrived at the hospital surrounded by well-wishers and the media. Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro was among the many VIPs at the hospital to greet the Pope. On Sunday morning, the Pope looked frail and tired as his voice wavered during a beatification ceremony in Rome.
