We ordered the pan-fried beef dumplings. You can dip them in a spicy soy-based sauce with red chilli flakes. Jeon (전) This is a savoury Korean pancake that can feature various ingredients. We got the one with seafood and rice cakes. The batter is very fluffy and a bit like a fritter. Hot dog (핫도그) Also known as a Korean rice dog, this is a hot dog on a stick, coated in a sweet batter. It can feature numerous toppings including panko breadcrumbs, french fries, cornflakes, and even ramen noodles. Hotteok (호떡) This stuffed pancake is a very popular Korean street food item, especially during the winter months. The dough is stuffed with a mixture of brown sugar, honey, chopped peanuts, and cinnamon. Hodugwaja (호두과자) Often called a walnut cookie, this is more like a donut hole made with pounded walnuts and wheat flour and then stuffed with red bean paste. It is a local specialty from the city of Cheonan, South Korea and it's also a popular snack to enjoy during train rides. Bibimbap (비빔밥) This is one of the most popular dishes you can try in Korea. It consists of a bed of rice topped with various vegetables which can include zucchini, soybean sprouts, mushrooms and more. It's typically topped with a fried egg and gochujang sauce which is a fermented red pepper paste. Tteokbokki (떡볶이) This Korean street food dish is made with sticky rice cakes served in a spicy red chilli paste sauce. After half a year away, we finally returned to the city, just in time for a sun-filled summer day and a big appetite. For this special video, we teamed up with the Korea Tourism Organization Canada—so be sure to stick around for details on their amazing giveaway, including round-trip flights to Korea! 🥟 Stop #1: Sunrise House – Traditional Korean Starters Our adventure began at Hayden Jeep, also known as Sunrise House, where we kicked off with some of Korea’s most beloved comfort foods. First up was a platter of modem kimchi pajeon—a savory Korean pancake loaded with seafood, rice cakes, and plenty of kimchi. Alongside it, we enjoyed sizzling hot, deep-fried beef dumplings (sogogi gun mandu), dunked in a spicy, tangy soy-vinegar-sesame-chili sauce. 🌭 Stop #2: Chung Chun – Street-Style Korean Hot Dog Next, we headed to Chung Chun for a bite of Korea’s famous rice dogs. These aren’t your ordinary hot dogs—ours was coated in a crispy potato batter, drizzled with ketchup, mustard, and a touch of sugar for that signature sweet-and-savory street food flavor. 🍩 Dessert #1: Hotteok – Sweet Korean Pancake No Korean street food adventure is complete without dessert! Our all-time favorite, hotteok, is a chewy, pan-fried cake stuffed with gooey brown sugar and a medley of nuts. We found the classic version, and as soon as we bit into the sweet, molten center, it took us back to winter walks in Seoul, warming our hands and hearts. 🥜 Dessert #2: Hodu Gwaja – Walnut Pastry Our next dessert was hodu gwaja—bite-sized pastries filled with rich red bean paste and walnuts, originating from Cheonan. Watching these treats being made in authentic cast iron molds was mesmerizing, and biting into one flooded us with nostalgia from train rides across Korea. 🥗 Stop #3: The Owl – Bibimbap & Spicy Rice Cakes at the Park The next part of our journey took us to The Owl, where we picked up classic bibimbap—a vibrant rice bowl topped with beef, egg, mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, greens, and a dollop of fiery gochujang. Mixing it up in Christie Pitts Park with families and live music all around, we were reminded of just how comforting and healthy Korean food can be.
