Mysterious, ancient monasteries, ruins of mighty castles and temples, thousand-year-old cemeteries, remains of bygone cultures and beliefs... Discover two Irish places full of secrets and learn the rich history of these lands. In this vlog I will show you Clonmacnoise and Drum, located in central Ireland near the town of Athlone. Ready for an adventure? --------------------------------------------------- My vlog from Athlone, Ireland: • ATHLONE in a Day: A Quick Tour of the Best... --------------------------------------------------- Clonmacnoise (Irish: Cluain Mhic Nóis), which means meadow of the sons of Nois, is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland – an ancient place where time stands still. Located along the River Shannon near the village of Shannonbridge, Clonmacnoise was founded by Saint Ciarán in the mid-sixth century, although the site was inhabited more than 2500 years ago, during the Iron Age. The monastery was intentionally built in the centre of Ireland, where an ancient roadway crossed the River, making the location of great strategic importance. The monastery began as a simple and modest settlement, but quickly grew to become one of the country’s great seats of learning and a place of pilgrimage. Scholars came from all over Europe to study at this great monastic city which was recognised as the heart of learning and creativity. It was a place admired for its literary and artistic achievements, and Kings and Chieftains would frequent its holy ground. The burial of the High King of Ireland there in the year 915 bears testament to the importance of Clonmacnoise, while the monastery is also credited for providing much of Ireland’s valuable Celtic art and illuminated manuscripts. Today, the ruins include a Cathedral, two round Towers, three high crosses, nine Churches and over 700 Early Christian graveslabs. --------------------------------------------------- The ancient monastic site of Drum (Irish: Druim) in County Roscommon is much smaller than Clonmacnoise, but is also worth a quick visit. The site is under the care of the local heritage group, which has recently restored the remains of the Romanesque abbey. The wonderful monastery is thought to have belonged to a community of Patrician monks. The fascinating site boasts a Medieval church, living quarters and 350 memorials. It is also home to St Brigid’s Holy Well, which was restored in 1990. The Holy Well is reputed by locals to have healing powers, and the annual tradition of Pattern Day still holds strong. The well is known to be the baptismal centre for the children of the Hymanny Tribes. --------------------------------------------------- You can find more content on my Instagram page: / piteroskyy_travels --------------------------------------------------- Music credits: Liborio Conti: https://www.no-copyright-music.com “Alexander Nakarada - Towards The Horizon” is under a Free To Use YouTube license / serpentsoundstudios / creatorchords "Solas Composer - Celtic Soul" is under a Creative Commons (BY-SA 3.0) license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... / solas_composer --------------------------------------------------- #ireland #éire #clonmacnoise #cluainMhicNóis #drum #druim #offaly #roscommon #monastic #visitireland --------------------------------------------------- Copyright by WiN Productions & Piterosky Corporation 2024
