(2 Jan 2022) Hundreds of mourners marked the second anniversary of the deaths of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad on Sunday. The gathering was part of a week-long series of events to mark the anniversary of the US-ordered attack. Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds force, and al-Muhandis, deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces, were killed in a US airstrike near the Iraqi capital's international airport. The strike, two years ago, ordered by then US President Donald Trump, and conducted by a drone, bombed a convoy on an access road near the airport. The killing of Soleimani and al-Muhandis pushed Iran and the United States perilously close to all-out conflict and sparked outrage in Iraq, leading parliament to call for the expulsion of all foreign troops from Iraq.
