(17 Feb 1996) English/Nat American pop superstar Michael Jackson was greeted by hundreds of screaming fans outside his exclusive London hotel, Saturday, as he left for a performance rehearsal.. He is to perform at Britain's top music award ceremony, " The Brits" early next week. Hundreds of fans have been waiting outside the Lanesborough Hotel on London's famous Hyde Park for a glimpse of their hero - Michael Jackson. The American pop superstar arrived Saturday and any time he emerges the crowds go into a frenzy. His appearance was eagerly awaited by the fans as they knew he was due to depart for a rehearsal for the Brit Awards- Britain's premier pop music awards. And the superstar didn't disappoint them. He gave a royal style walkabout, wearing his trademark black mask to protect his lungs from pollutants. He appeared relaxed and charmed the screaming crowds by wandering up and down the security cordons so they could all get a look at him. One overenthusiastic fan broke through the fences but he was quickly taken away by security guards. The Brit Awards are on Monday night and Jackson will be performing his hit 'Earth Song'. It is the first time he has performed the song live. Securing his attendance is seen as a big coup for the organisers of the event as the awards are not well-known outside Britain. But it was not only the organisers who were happy to have Jackson here in the country. While some were overcome by the whole experience, others were jubilant at having seen him having camped out for two days in anticipation. Others had travelled from around the country just to be near him but this man was a seasoned follower of the singer whose career has survived child-abuse allegations and a marriage to Elvis Presley's daughter. SOUNDBITE: I've been a fan for about 15 years, very dedicated. Where ever he goes, I go- no matter where it is. SUPER CAPTION: Jackson Fan SOUNDBITE: I came here at about six thirty this morning in the freezing cold and I've been waiting all this time so hopefully I'll get to see him. SUPER CAPTION: Jackson Fan SOUNDBITE: I think its the magic and the myth that surrounds Michael, I think that's what attract me to him more than anything else. SUPER CAPTION: Jackson Fan SOUNDBITE: He only comes once every so often , he hasn't been for about three and a half years, so its worth to see him to get a few pictures. SUPER CAPTION: Jackson Fan The Lanesborough Hotel has increased its security for the duration of Jackson's visit. Not that they are objecting to his presence, far from it- the hotel has given the superstar the royal suite as befits his role as the King of Pop. The room costs two thousand pounds a night, but it won't even make a dent in the superstar's finances. He has earned millions of dollars from his singing which started when he was just a boy as a member of the Jackson Five in the early sixties. Since then he has spawned countless imitators with his distinctive image, catchy pop tunes and complicated dance routines The excitement generated by his brief appearance meant the screaming continued even after he had driven off, now they were screaming for him to come back.
