Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that affects the macula, the small central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It’s one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over the age of 50. AMD can make everyday tasks like reading, driving, or recognizing faces difficult, as it blurs or distorts the centre of vision. In this video Dr. Vishma Prabhu, Consultant, Vitreoretinal Services, Narayana Nethralaya explains about AMD in and how it affects vision. There are two main types — dry and wet — with the dry form being more common and progressing slowly, while the wet form can lead to quicker vision loss. Although there’s no cure, early detection, lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and not smoking, and medical treatments can help manage the condition and slow its progression.
