CINCINNATI - A recent dermatology report suggests that certain lifestyle choices may reduce the need for high-tech topical skin treatments. Dr. Elizabeth Muennich of Dermatology & Skin Care Associates emphasizes the importance of avoiding sun exposure, not smoking, and getting adequate sleep to delay or reduce the necessity for these treatments. "You definitely want to get about 7-9 hours of quality sleep which is very difficult when we’re so busy running around," she said. Dr. Muennich explained that good sleep increases human growth hormone, which boosts collagen and aids skin repair, while poor sleep raises cortisol levels, worsening inflammation. She also advocates for regular exercise and reducing salt intake to prevent skin puffiness, particularly under the eyes. For those considering laser treatments, Dr. Muennich noted that different wavelengths target specific skin issues, such as oxyhemoglobin and melanin. However, she reminded that lifestyle changes like sleep and exercise are free, whereas laser treatments can cost several hundred dollars and are often not covered by insurance. _______________ Follow!
