Chinko is a vast tract of intact savannah and tropical forest spanning over 64,000 km2 in the Central African Republic (CAR). When African Parks partnered with the Government of CAR to manage Chinko in 2014, climate change effects and unsustainable natural resource use had heavily degraded the ecosystem. A 2017 survey estimated that most large wildlife in Chinko had declined by more than 80% over a five-year period, with fewer than 100 elephant remaining. But thanks to effective conservation law enforcement, ongoing research and monitoring, participatory land use planning and positive community engagement, Chinko is becoming a safe haven for wildlife once again. Today, chimpanzees are regularly documented, the local northern lion population has increased from a few dozen in 2017 to over a hundred. Buffalo numbers are increasing annually by about 20% and the local elephant population has stabilised with breeding herds moving worry-free within the parks’ core zone. Key predator species such as leopard, spotted hyena, wild dog, golden cat and caracal are now all regularly seen. Ndondondo Bienvenu has been a part of this story of revival. Raised as an elephant hunter, he now calls Chinko’s elephants his children and works every day to protect the few hundred that exist. Watch our film to see the vital role African Parks rangers play in protecting Chinko’s wildlife.
