Off the coast of Sylt, the search for methane hydrate on the Alpha Gas drilling rig is in full swing. This fossil fuel is expected to replace oil, gas, and coal in the near future. In a bid to gain an edge on the global market, Alpha Gas operates without authorization from the EU environmental protection agency. Ruthless project manager Kramlick (Dan van Husen) ignores even the warnings of the company’s environmental officer, Christian Wieland (Lars Gärtner), and orders risky detonations to determine the size of the underwater methane hydrate field. When Wieland dies under mysterious circumstances, his friend Jaan (Kristian Kiehling), a skilled surfer, comes into possession of the risk assessment report on the detonations. Determined to stop the illegal activities, Jaan teams up with dedicated hydrologist Svenja (Anja Knauer). But they are too late—disaster strikes. The very first explosions trigger an uncontrollable thermocausal chain reaction. Sylt is hit by a massive wave, leaving many injured in its wake. As the situation spirals out of control, Alpha Gas decides to cut its losses. But Kramlick, driven by greed, snaps—he seizes control of the drilling rig and detonates all remaining explosives at once.
