Magnetic properties When a magnetic field is applied to a substance, two types of a magnetic behaviour are observed. Diamagnetic: These substances are repelled by applied magnetic fields. Paramagnetic : These substances are attracted by applied magnetic fields. Ferromagnetic: The sentences which are attracted very strongly. Note: Ferromagnetism is an extreme form of paramagnetism. Paramagnetism is a property due to the presence of unpaired electrons. Transition metals ions contain unpaired electrons in (n-1)d orbital, so most of the metals ions and their compounds are paramagnetic. As the number of unpaired electrons increases from 1 to 5, the magnetic movement and paramagnetic character also increases. Those transition elements which have paired electrons are called diamagnetic. Magnetic moment: It is due to orbital motion and spin motion it is represented by u =root n(n+2) where is the Magnetic Moment, n is the number of unpaired electrons. Unit of magnetic movement is Bohr magnetons (BM). Magnetic moment increases with the increasing number of unpaired electrons.
