Daily Operation: Eric B & Rakim Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em (May 22, 1990)

On May 22, 1990, Eric B. & Rakim released their third album, Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em. This album is considered one of Eric B. & Rakim’s most cohesive projects. Rolling Stone wrote in a 1990 review that the duo were both “hip hop formalists” and “formal innovators.” The title track was chosen as its second single and became the album’s most successful release, peaking at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. It features Rakim’s trademark masterful and dynamic lyricism. Paul C was originally supposed to serve as a producer of the album, but was murdered in 1989. As a result, much of the work on it was handled by his protégé, Large Professor. Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em is one of the few albums to receive a 5-mic review from The Source when it was first released. Though not considered as iconic as Paid in Full or Follow the Leader, it remains a crucial entry in the duo’s discography.
