100 years of SAMH

For 100 years, SAMH has been Scotland’s national mental health charity. And we will be here for as long as we are needed. Pre-dating the NHS, SAMH traces its roots back to the early 1900’s and the pioneering work of Dr Kate Fraser, CBE, from Paisley. At a time when women were expected to remain in the home and mentally ill people were routinely shut away in workhouses or prisons, often beside criminals, Dr Fraser’s dedication to improving the conditions and treatment of people with mental health problems was truly inspirational and formed the earliest iteration of SAMH.
