Śrīmad Bhāgavatam CANTO 4 Chapter Seventeen – Mahārāja Pṛthu Becomes Angry at the Earth In this important chapter of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (Canto 4), the great sage Maitreya describes how King Pṛthu confronted Mother Earth when his citizens were suffering from severe famine. After being coronated, King Pṛthu ruled responsibly. But soon there was a scarcity of food grains. The citizens approached him in distress, saying they were starving. As an ideal king and representative of the Lord, Pṛthu deeply reflected on the cause. He understood that the Earth was withholding her produce because of the previous misrule of King Vena. In anger, Pṛthu took up his bow and prepared to punish the Earth. Out of fear, the Earth assumed the form of a cow and fled. The King chased her everywhere, showing that leadership means responsibility and accountability. In ISKCON teachings, this episode shows that a ruler must ensure proper use of natural resources for the welfare of all living beings. Finally, the Earth surrendered and offered beautiful prayers, recognizing Pṛthu as an empowered incarnation of the Supreme Lord. She glorified him as the same Supreme who had previously appeared as Varaha to rescue her from the cosmic waters. She questioned how the Lord who once saved her was now ready to punish her. This chapter teaches deep spiritual lessons: the Lord sometimes shows anger for the protection of dharma, not out of hatred. Nature supplies abundantly when leadership is righteous and society follows Vedic principles. Exploitation leads to scarcity, but God-centered governance brings prosperity.
