This Vidraru Dam drone video shows the empty lake during the controlled drainage on the Transfăgărășan road, Romania. In this video we explore Vidraru Lake and Dam during a very rare moment. For the first time in almost 60 years, the lake is being emptied in a controlled way for major maintenance and modernization works. Because this happens so rarely, we decided to fly the drone over Vidraru and capture views that are normally impossible to see. The controlled emptying started in august 2025 and is needed so engineers can inspect the dam, update old systems, and make sure it remains safe and functional for the future. Vidraru Dam is an important hydropower structure in Romania and this work helps extend its life for many more years. As the water level dropped, parts of the lake became visible. Under the water lies the old village of Cumpăna, flooded in the 1960s when the dam was built. You can now see traces of the homes and a church that stayed hidden for decades. Because the lake looks so different, many stories appeared online. Some people joked about hidden gold or secret plans. These are just internet rumors. The real reason is simple. Safety checks and modernization. This drone video shows the scale of the dam, the empty lake, and the surrounding mountains from above.
