My career began about 25 years ago as a software engineer at a Japanese IT company, where minimal English proficiency was required. Since I primarily used Japanese, I was selected to be dispatched to a foreign factory site where our software was being tested. When urgent issues arose, I found myself struggling to use English effectively to diagnose and resolve problems. Although I had a basic understanding of the language, it was not enough to clearly express my thoughts or feelings, especially in critical situations. That experience made me realize the need to improve my English skills—I wanted to become fluent so I could work more efficiently with international customers and colleagues. That’s when TOEIC came into the picture, and I began studying with TOEIC textbooks. The process was both challenging and enjoyable; watching my scores improve was truly satisfying and kept me motivated. What finally led me to achieve a perfect score of 990 was my declaration to reach that goal by the end of 2024—made in front of the members of a TOEIC study club at the 2023 Christmas event. At that time, I had scored 975, and I believed that making such a New Year’s promise would fuel my enthusiasm. It was a tough period during which I tried for 10 months but managed to reach at most 985. However, in November 2024, I was thrilled to announce, “My dear friends, I did it!” Today, I use English every day at work—whether in meetings, chat messages, or translations—with great confidence.
