2016 Mitchell Hochberg Memorial Public Education Event with Lee Mun Wah There is an African proverb, “To go fast, you must go alone. To go far, we must go together.” Yet, how do we find a way to connect with each other when we live in such separate and divided communities? How do we acknowledge and let go of the assumptions and stereotypes that we’ve accumulated about those who live outside our familiar communities and who are ethnically and culturally different from ourselves? These are but a few of the important issues that need to be addressed before we can truly come together as a nation, as a community and in our personal relationships. There is no shortcut in the journey to create community and connection with those who we do not know or understand. We each must take the time to walk each other home. Lee Mun Wah is an internationally renowned Chinese American documentary filmmaker, author, educator, community therapist, and master diversity trainer. He is the Executive Director of StirFry Seminars & Consulting, a diversity training company that provides educational tools and workshops on cross-cultural communication and awareness, mindful facilitation, and conflict mediation techniques. In 1995, Oprah Winfrey did a one-hour special on Lee Mun Wah’s life and his most famous documentary about racism, The Color of Fear. In 2014, he released his latest film, If These Halls Could Talk, which focuses on college students speaking to diversity issues within higher education.
