Life and work aboard Norwegian whaler hunting for Japan market

A video documentary shows life abroad the 434-ton Norwegian whaling ship Kato as it operates in waters off the Svalbard archipelago located near the northern latitude of 80 degrees in the Arctic Ocean. The crew can be seen feasting silently on whale dish, manning their stations and harpooning and hauling in a catch that is quickly sectioned into blocks and frozen. During a two-week journey from late July, the 11-member crew captured 17 minke whales, with all of the catch destined for the Japanese market. Japan restarted commercial whaling in July for the first time in 31 years after withdrawing from the International Whaling Commission. Norway, on the other hand, is conducting commercial whaling as an IWC member. (Sho Hatsumi)
