A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based platformer for PCs running Dos, The Simpsons: Bart's House of Weirdness. I played through the game twice for this video. The first game is set to normal difficulty and is running in VGA with a Sound Blaster (386DX 33). The second game (starting at 16:11) is set to hard difficulty and is running in Tandy mode (286/12). Bart has been sent to his room, but he's not about to let that ruin his fun. He begins daydreaming, daydreaming leads to adventure, and before long, Bart has committed to becoming the coolest hero the world has ever seen. As Dr. Marvin Monroe explains the situation, "'Bart's House of Weirdness' is a subconscious interpretation of reality as Bart would like it to be." (Sounds a lot like the setup for Bart's Nightmare, doesn't it?) The game is a flip-screen action-platformer with seven stages to conquer. The first six can be played in any order, and the goal in each is to collect a specific item. Finishing a paired set of stages will earn you a "cool item", and you need all three of these to open the path to the Radical Zone where Sideshow Bob is holding Krusty captive. Though it looks like a 16-bit console game, Bart's House of Weirdness's gameplay is firmly rooted in the design ethos of mid/late 80s PC platformers. In terms of difficulty, it sits about on par with the NES Simpsons games - it's challenging but fair - but not in the same ways. The action places more emphasis on careful routing and timing than on reflexes and button mashing, and every screen presents its own self-contained challenge. It's conceptually similar to games like Dark Castle on the Genesis and Dragon's Lair on the NES, but it's far more polished and intuitively playable than either of those. But the thing that really sells Bart's House of Weirdness is its production values. The humor stays true to the show, the graphics are incredible for their time, and perhaps most impressive of all, it meaningful caters to people without soundcards. If you don't have an FM or MIDI card installed, the game will pipe bitcrushed samples through the internal PC speaker. If you're the type who can still jump into an early 90s PC action game and have fun, this is a great one, and the fact that it's a Simpsons game makes it all the better. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
