CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A breakthrough in treating brain cancer could help extend life. It's not a cure, but when it comes to glioblastoma, a brain electricity device does appear to be making a difference. Glioblastoma is the kind of brain cancer that took the lives of Ted Kennedy and John McCain. It's sort of a cobweb-like tumor that spreads in the brain. Survival is typically measured in months, which is why a device that can potentially add months really might matter. Jerry Bennet was diagnosed at the Cleveland Clinic with glioblastoma. He had surgery and traditional treatment, but now also uses this wearable therapy that creates electrical fields. This disrupts cells that are trying to divide, and when cancer cells can't do that, they die off and can't spread. Each morning, Bennet shaves his head and his wife attaches four patches of nine electrodes to his scalp. Wires run across his body to a battery pack he carries with him, keeping low-intensity electricity flowing 24 hours a day. According to the Cleveland team, patients who use this device at the time of a new diagnosis live on average five months longer than those who do not. These are available at some area treatment centers, but they are not a mainstream treatment yet.
