This video demonstrates how Excel's Lambda functions can be used to access data within complex nested formats on a worksheet. Such data layouts are very common when the author's attention is focussed on the appearance rather than the function of their data. The Lambda function can provide an easily understood notation =DATAλ(client, employee, measure, quarter) that conceals the detailed mechanism of accessing a range 'Data'. Some in the finance community may argue that the function implements a 'black box' that is inaccessible to users for checking and, hence, is necessarily bad. The reality is that the results delivered by the function are far easier to check that the formulas that create them. In such a case 'black boxes' (or, at least, a shade of grey) reduce the probability of error. For the programming enthusiast, the function is implemented as two nested Lambda functions which allows the function to be customised to apply to different data layouts within a workbook.
