Discus throw technique demonstration by Vésteinn Hafsteinsson, the coach of Daniel Ståhl, Gerd Kanter and Joachim Olsen. In these videos Hafsteinsson shows the main principles of throwing in a very detailed way. The demo athletes are Gerd Kanter (EST) and Robert Häggblom (FIN). The video is recorded in Tanhuvaara, Finland at autumn 2006. Gerd Kanter throwed his career best 73,38 the same year. The next two years, 2007 and 2008 brought him gold medals in both World Championships (Osaka) and Olympic Games (Beijing). Robert Häggblom’s career best at shot put (20,53) was thrown 2007. According to Vésteinn Hafsteinsson a discus throw can be divided into five phases Swing Turn Sprint Power position Release Key aspects of the swing-phase 1. Find your comfortable stance 2. Make sure the low point of discus is straight in front of you 3. Keep feet fixed during the backswing 4. Weight is shifted from left to right, but is mostly centered between legs 5. Shoulders are leveled at all times 6. Make sure hips are strong and stable 7. Arm is loose 8. Breath at the end of the backswing 9. Separation between arms is very important 10.
